Hi guys, it’s Dolly. Over the past few months I’ve been thinking about what to write in this blog. I’ve also been thinking about whether or not blogging is a waste of time or something that is therapeutic when I have the chance to sit down and get something done. I’ve decided it is better to write than to not write, so here I am. Because I cannot decide what topic to write, this is a list of all of the topics in my head. If you’re thinking about any of the same topics, tell me. We can chat about it in person when I see you next.
1. Skiing
Ski lesson season is in full swing. I resisted it last year because it seemed like a chore—getting kids in snow gear, figuring out rentals, driving up a mountain. Thinking about all the steps made me tired. This year, my nearly 4-year-old and my 6-year-old were excited to try it out, and I agreed it was time. They loved it! (Shout out to Mt. Seymour for great instructors). I am taking my first lessons next week to keep up with my kids. Skiing is ever-present on the brain and I am not sure I’ll succeed. Here’s to pizza french-frying my way down the bunny slope!
2. America’s Freefall
I’m American and live in Canada as a permanent resident. Watching my home country spinning, falling, and spiraling without a parachute is scary. It is innate within Americans to fight though. We are firey people. We all have that in common. We do not follow the rules. It is ironic given the current state of the government, but bucking the system is a strength in many ways even if it is currently an exploited value. MAGA or not, we can align with not wanting to be taken advantage of, and I have faith the American people won’t allow it. How far it will get before they see it and come together? I’m not sure.
Dan Rather is a little spark for me amid the darkness.
3. Artwork
We purchased artwork for our new home and now I’ve become a bit obsessed with looking for artwork and different galleries just for fun. Who am I? What has taken over me? Anyhow, I like these bunnies from Aki Kuroda but he doesn’t ship to Canada. I’m crying about it, but I’ll admire it from afar for now. All of his artwork is interesting to me. Check him out if that’s your thing.
4. On Writing by Steven King
Classic book. Everyone should read it. He is a teacher. He is funny. He hates adverbs. He permits you to write in the genre that you love, eliminating the stress of others’ opinions. It’s a great memoir. Oh, and f**k that babysitter he had when he was 4. F**k her.
5. Parent Advisory Council
The PAC at my son’s school takes up quite a bit of space in my head. I’m new to the scene, but enjoy considering fundraising ideas, talking to parents, and providing the best tools for the students at the school. My small part is keeping parents informed of what’s upcoming via social media. February 26th is Pink Shirt Day, an anti-bullying campaign. There’s a PAC meeting coming up too, and Spring Break next month. Discovering the best ways to communicate with parents has been a fun challenge. I hope to keep evolving over the next year.
Time’s up! I’ve got to shower and pick up the kids from school. I was too tired yesterday to be an A+ Mom, but today I’ve got energy, so it’s gonna be a great afternoon.
Byeee!
Dolly
